A close look at the starting Ⅺ of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in order to understand how they fare against other teams in the 2022 edition of IPL.
Having let go of David Warner, Rashid Khan, Jonny Bairstow and others, SRH have looked at shaping a team under Kane Williamson. Their stint at the 2022 IPL auction was one that was confusing but logical. The board went on to shape specific parts of their starting Ⅺ and build a team that can do a lot more than what they did the previous season.
But how does their starting Ⅺ fare against the rest in the Indian Premier League? Let’s go ahead and find out.
The Strongest Department in SRH
If we were to pick the strongest department in this SRH lineup, it would include the fast bowling unit. Fueled by the likes of T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen and Umran Malik, the fast bowling unit is one that is filled with experience, pace and everything that a department of this sort would require.
If all of these bowlers come together, they can be of serious concern to batsmen and even take them on in death overs. However, a slip in form could go a long way and ruin SRHs hopes of taking early wickets.
Comparing the bowling unit with other teams
Despite having a good bowling unit, SRH’s men don’t do well against the other teams in the league. If we were to bring in the lineup of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and others, you would see a better bowling unit. LSG have the likes of Avesh Khan, Jason Holder, Ravi Bishnoi, Krishnappa Gowtham and more, all of whom were and are in good form.
So SRH don’t have a lot to showcase despite having some of the best bowlers of the current generation.
The Weakest Department in SRH
One of the main concerns around the SRH squad is the batting lineup. While SRH do have batters of top quality, they lack consistency and are yet to prove a lot. For example, Abhishek Sharma is a talented batsman and one capable of doing a lot of damage to bowlers. But if SRH need to get going, they need a supporting act alongside him.
And in the middle order, SRH will have to depend on Nicholas Pooran. The West Indian international, who is known for his big shot, is yet to truly create a mark in the IPL and once he does, SRH will look like a balanced squad. On the other hand, Kane Williamson, alongside Rahul Tripathi will also have to look alive and create more opportunities for the Sunrisers.
Despite being capable of big shots, the lineup will require more consistency as they need their batsmen doing their job regularly.
Comparing the batting unit with other teams
A look at the batting unit of RCB, RR and PBKS, makes one want to search apps for cricket betting and choose these teams over SRH. While SRH have strength, they lack depth when compared to teams like RCB. Apart from an opening partnership between Anuj Rawat and Faf du Plessis, RCB goes on to bring in Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, Shahbaz Ahmed, Sherfane Rutherford and more.
The Bangalore team also have a good lineup of all-rounders with Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel and more being at the centre of everything. So a close comparison with SRH won’t stand and one will clearly understand how it begins to move forward.

There’s no covering up the fact that SRH don’t seem to be the best team on paper. However, such analysis won’t be the only thing that is incremental in helping a team enter the playoffs or even the coveted title. It takes a lot to win a game and from the squad, it is clear that SRH have what it takes.
