Well, the abrupt change in Andhra Pradesh’s governor has surprised the political establishment. There are a variety of perspectives abounding on social media. The state government is at a loss as to why such a severe measure, which was not anticipated at all, was taken.
Since Biswabhushan Harichandan was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh in July 2019 after the YSRCP took office, there has never been a disagreement between the State administration and the gubernatorial office, unlike in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Telangana. The interactions were cordial. The two bills, AP Decentralization and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020, which are intended to establish the three capital cities for the state, and the AP Capital Region Development Authority (Repeal) Bill, 2020, seeking to abolish the APCRDA formed in December 2014 to develop Amaravati as the state capital in July 2020. This was, however, struck down by the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
The controversial three-capital Bill has been withdrawn by the Andhra Pradesh government in response to the High Court’s ruling, and the Governor has given his approval. The governor was accused by the opposition of imposing sanctions on all bills and decrees that the government sent his way, even when they were undemocratic and unconstitutional. Is that the rationale behind his relocation?
The political landscape in Andhra Pradesh is rapidly shifting. On the one hand, the YSRCP wants to take all 175 seats in the Assembly, eliminating any room for opposition. This is unquestionably a risky move for democracy. The opposition parties, particularly the TDP and Jana Sena, are cozying up, on the other hand. Despite various obstacles, the TDP is already running an aggressive campaign restrictions imposed by the police. Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan too has been making some sharp remarks during his public meetings and is set to launch his campaign soon in his new vehicle ‘Varahi’.
There are rumours that, despite the fact that the state will hold elections next year, Jagan Mohan Reddy may dissolve the Assembly in the second half of the year to prevent the opposition from having much time to coalesce. Some political groups have already started having discussions behind the scenes as a result of this. The state BJP’s leadership turmoil is the only issue, which has left it in a limbo. Political circles believe that the current state BJP president is too accommodative of the incumbent government and has failed to seize the initiative and establish himself as a rival power base. State officials continue to be more critical of the former administration than the current administration.
The suspected involvement of YSRCP MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and his son Raghava Reddy in the Delhi liquor scam is a further contentious political issue. Similar to this, the CBI has accelerated its investigation into the death of Y S Vivekananda Reddy, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s uncle. The sudden change in governor becomes significant in light of this.
Abdul Nazeer, the next governor, hails from the neighbouring state of Karnataka. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2017 after serving as a judge on the Karnataka High Court, and he retired on January 4 of 2023. He was on the panel that rendered decisions in the Triple Talaq and Ayodhya disputes.
