Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death; causing one out of every four deaths in India. On the occasion of World Heart Day, a group of top cardiologists from CARE Hospitals including senior consultants Dr. Kaparthi and Dr. Bharat Vijay Purohit said that patients suffering from heart diseases should not delay and ignore treatment due to the ongoing pandemic.

Patients suffering from heart disease need to take more care of themselves physically, emotionally and also follow the protocols to protect themselves from getting infected by the virus said Dr. Kaparthi, Sr Cardiologist, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.

“Exercising indoors, practicing yoga, eating healthy, sleeping, taking medications regularly, wearing masks, using sanitizers, following social distancing and staying positive are some of the ways in which heart patients can keep themselves healthy and protect themselves from getting infected by COVID-19,” Dr. Kaparthi added.

Reports from all over the globe state that patients with pre-existing heart diseases, previous heart attacks, or low-pumping efficiency of the heart (heart failure) are at a greater risk of developing serious Covid-19 infection.

However, data also suggests that hospitals around the world including India have noted an approximately 50% decrease in the patients visiting hospitals with acute heart attacks, a medical emergency requiring lifesaving treatment.

Explaining the situation, Dr.Bharat Vijay Purohit, Sr. Interventional Consultant, CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad said, “Around half of the people with heart and circulatory diseases have found it harder to get medical treatment since the COVID-19 pandemic began. While there are fewer admissions in hospitals, the number of people dying at home due to cardiac arrests has been increasing.”

“The biggest concern is that despite having serious heart conditions, patients have been delaying treatments which will deteriorate their health further,” he added.
Avoiding treatment or delaying it further may increase the risk of being infected by COVID-19 or will deteriorate the health condition further. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that people suffering from heart diseases should not delay treatment any further.
