The ‘My Nation’ stall at Numaish, a unique initiative by the Prison’s Department, has become a popular attraction for visitors at the Exhibition Grounds in Hyderabad.
The stall not only retails products made by prisoners but also is managed by them under the watchful eyes of jail wardens.
The outlet stocks a wide variety of products starting from carpets, bed sheets, towels, teapoy, tables, chairs and even washroom products. According to authorities, the products were made by prisoners drawn from jails located in Cherlapalli, Chanchalguda and Warangal.
To man the counters at the stall, accompanied by a police constable, the prisoners open their stalls by 3 pm and man them till 10.30 pm before returning back.
“The stall is aimed at promoting prisoners’ products and also to bring them closer to society. We are expecting to raise Rs 50 lakh revenue from it,” says Director General (Prisons) VK Singh. The Prisons Department operates 40 outlets in different parts of the State and is preparing the ground to set up 60 other outlets by the month-end.
“We will give outlet franchise to ex-prisoners and persons from weaker sections,” he says.
According to officials, the initiative became an ideal way to earn a livelihood for prisoners. “We pay Rs 80 per day to each prisoner who makes products in the jail. The idea behind engaging the prisoners for the stall is to rehabilitate them and in the process change their mindset,” says stall in-charge and Cherlapalli jailer Shobhan Babu.
Four prisoners from Cherlapalli have been drawn for duty at the exhibition stall. “Their selection is based on previous conduct,” he added. #HydNumaesh2019 #HydNews #KhabarLive
