The most reputed and ruling national party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is using its ideological support ally Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a puppet to gain mileage in several political activities across the country. The recent MLA’s poaching case is an example in Telangana State.
The RSS, which will commemorate its centennial in 2025, has long been regarded as a respectable, service-oriented sociocultural organisation. However, recent events, in which names of the senior-most RSS leadership appeared, have opened the organization’s eyes after it had been tacitly supporting the BJP.
One cannot just write off the current cash-for-defection incident, which was witnessed in Hyderabad two weeks ago, as an illustration of the rapacious politics being used by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The slick and sophisticated poaching attempt by the three BJP “agents,” which has now been exposed, seems to have given place to a heated debate on whether the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) should participate in the shady politics being practised by its protégé, the BJP.
The RSS, which will commemorate its 100th anniversary in 2025, has consistently been regarded as a reputable, service-oriented sociocultural organisation, both by those who adhere to its philosophy and by those who do not. However, recent events that included names of the senior-most RSS leadership have opened the organization’s eyes after it had been passively backing the BJP.
The trio of BJP “agents,” Ramachandra Bharathi, Somayaji, and Nanda Kumar, have openly asserted that they were close friends with not only Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah, but also top RSS figures such as Dattatreya Hosabale, the RSS Sarkaryavah (or general secretary), BL Santosh (who is now the BJP national secretary), and others.
In fact, the SIT’s summons to BL Santosh to appear before it in the “poachgate” investigation under Section 41-A of the CrPC has shocked the RSS and BJP leadership. Prior to being “loaned” to the BJP as its national general secretary, the leader, who is respectfully referred to as “Santoshji,” was a full-time pracharak of the RSS.
He is tasked with keeping an eye on BJP activities and ensuring that the party adheres to its larger ideological agenda and vision. He is known as Narendra Modi’s pointsman.
Sansothji enjoys such high regard within the BJP and RSS communities that he is currently regarded as holding the fourth position within the BJP, behind JP Nadda, Amit Shah, and Narendra Modi.
But everything has altered as a result of “poachgate.” According to reports, some RSS officials weren’t happy with the way Modi and Shah were ramming through their agenda. Some leaders of the RSS have suddenly come to the realisation that the RSS, which once served as the BJP’s leader, is now merely the BJP’s follower. The RSS was now reduced to supporting the actions of the BJP leadership, rather than playing the role of a big brother who frequently guided or corrected the political path whenever the BJP went astray.
The RSS has always been sending very subtle messages to the BJP on burning issues. Very recently, when the BJP leaders were vocal about the Gyanvapi mosque issue, the RSS Sar Sanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat assertively questioned the need to “look for a Shivling in every mosque”. That was the time when Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay went overboard and threatened to dig up every mosque to check for Shivling.
Such is the power of the RSS chief that the BJP dropped the Gyanvapi demand like a hot potato from the next day. If this incident spoke of the sincerity of the RSS and its grip on the BJP policies, the ‘poachgate’ is being seen as an indicator of how the Modi-Shah duo has been enjoying inexhaustible levels of power so much so that they are dragging the RSS into the cesspool of dirtiest politics.
The debatable question among the top-rung leaders is whether the RSS is guiding the BJP or vice versa as narrated in the ‘poachgate’ scandal by the three BJP ‘agents’. The arrested ‘agents’ detailed how under the guidance of the RSS leader, they have toppled governments in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and similar coups were being planned in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.
This sparked debates over whether the Modi-Shah team has grown more strong than the RSS and whether the governing body, which was renowned for its dedication to society, had fallen out of favour with the populace. The RSS, which formerly garnered respect, is now viewed as a BJP adjunct, according to the leaders’ general sentiment.
